The Hornbook was a handheld wooden tablet used to teach children from as early as 1450 up until the nineteenth century. As a teaching aid, the hornbook displayed the information that the students had to learn. A printed sheet of paper attached to the tablet showed the alphabet, vowels, numbers, the Lord's Prayer and other work considered important to know.

I created this modern day hornbook as a case to hold on to and to lock the iPad in place. Grasping the case by its handle makes reading the iPad easier. The leather hinged cover flips back and makes a support made to stand the device on a table. The closed cover protects the computer and the handle makes it simple to carry. Openings in the back of the case allow access to all the buttons. (The iPad must be removed from the case for charging.)

The iPad Hornbook, a solid mahogany case, measures 3/4" thick by 7 3/8" wide by 13 1/4" long, (Including the handle.) The cover hinge is leather. The finish is hand rubbed tung oil. This case may be made in any variety of hardwood.
